Transitioning from military service to a civilian career can be challenging, but for Ajian "AJ" Mitchell, the journey was smooth, thanks to the SkillBridge program at General Dynamics Mission Systems. AJ, currently a senior integrated logistics support technician II in San Diego, California, found a seamless transition from his role as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps to a rewarding civilian career.

AJ's military background as a maintenance management specialist (MOS 0411) in logistics prepared him for the hands-on logistics and direct Navy program support offered by General Dynamics Mission Systems.

"I wanted a clean runway into the defense industry where my military background translated into something real," AJ shared. "General Dynamics Mission Systems offered the exact environment I was aiming for: hands-on logistics, direct Navy program support, and a team that knew how to take military skills and turn them into civilian capability."

The SkillBridge program played a pivotal role in AJ's transition.

"SkillBridge removed the biggest friction points," AJ explains. "I learned industry processes, expectations, and workflows while still being an active-duty Marine. By the time my End of Active Service (EAS) hit, I already understood the job, the mission, and the environment. It made the transition smooth and zero-stress."

In his current role, AJ supports the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Mission Package Program in San Diego, California. His daily responsibilities include ensuring asset accountability, material tracking, and coordination across fleet teams to maintain mission readiness.

"The best part is the team I work with," AJ notes. "Everyone is sharp, experienced, and locked in on the mission, creating an environment where we stay efficient and build camaraderie."

AJ served in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant from 2021-2025 with 1st Light armored reconnaissance Battalion, and 2d Battalion, 11th Marines Regiment.

Reflecting on his experience, AJ emphasizes the importance of early application and commitment to the SkillBridge program.

"I would tell them to apply early and take it seriously. SkillBridge at General Dynamics Mission Systems is a legitimate pipeline into a long-term career. If you come prepared, stay engaged, and treat it like a real job, you will walk away with skills, relationships, and opportunities that set you up for a strong transition."

AJ's journey from military service to a civilian career at General Dynamics Mission Systems demonstrates how the company values the skills and experiences of veterans.

"I experienced a level of trust and responsibility from the start. I was treated as a part of the team, not as someone with no experience just watching from the sideline. That showed me that my skills mattered and that I could contribute at a high level in a civilian role before even leaving active duty," AJ recalls.

As a senior ILS technician II, AJ's work centers around supporting logistics operations at the Mission Module Readiness Center in San Diego. Ensuring asset accountability, material tracking, and coordination across fleet teams to maintain mission readiness are key aspects of his role. The collaborative environment at General Dynamics Mission Systems has allowed AJ to thrive and build strong relationships with his colleagues.

AJ's experience with the SkillBridge program has been overwhelmingly positive, providing him with the tools and support needed to transition smoothly from military service to a civilian career. His story serves as an inspiration and example to other veterans considering a similar path, demonstrating that with the right support and preparation, a fulfilling and successful career after military service is within reach.

AJ Mitchell's journey from the United States Marine Corps to a senior integrated logistics support technician II at General Dynamics Mission Systems is a great example of how the SkillBridge program can facilitate a smooth and successful transition for veterans. Through hands-on experience, a supportive team, and a clear understanding of industry processes, AJ has found purpose in his civilian career, proving that the skills and experiences gained in the military can translate into valuable contributions in the defense industry.
