"My Experience in the General Dynamics Military Internship Program"

Cameron Dunkin SkillBridge Intern

Cameron Dunkin, Sr. Systems Administrator

Former Staff Sergeant, U.S. Air Force

Cameron Dunkin, who came to the General Dynamics SkillBridge program as a U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant, completed his internship and was then offered a position as a Senior Systems Administrator. Cameron talks about his experience and his advice for others interested in the Military Internship Program.

How did the SkillBridge program help your transition from active duty to a civilian career?

The SkillBridge Internship program made the transition from Active Duty to Civilian extremely smooth. The program introduced me to a different side of my career field and prepared me for my current role with General Dynamics. I was given the opportunity to develop professionally outside of the military environment I was so accustomed to. If I hadn’t participated in the SkillBridge program, the shock-factor of the transition away from Active Duty would have been much more significant.

What did you find most surprising or rewarding about the program?

What I found most surprising was how much easier it is to throw on a uniform rather than deciding what I’ll be wearing to work! In all seriousness, the work experience and professional relationships I gained from this opportunity are the most rewarding aspects of this program.

What would you tell others thinking about applying for the internship?

I would tell them that this experience is priceless. It gives you hands-on experience in the environment you will soon be transitioning to. You’re given a chance to show the work ethic and drive that you’ve developed during your time in the service. The months of experience you will gain will give you a huge leg-up on the professionals you will be competing with. Don’t pass up this opportunity.
