It has been very interesting to see the other side of the process of developing new capabilities for our warfighters. The goal is the same, but the mindset is very different in industry. I also really enjoy working with experienced engineers and getting to dive deeply into the technical aspects of the products here.

What led you to apply for a SkillBridge internship with General Dynamics Mission Systems?

My time with the Acquisition Corps provided significant experience working with DoD contractors, which led to my interest in the SkillBridge opportunities available for the Phoenix area. Additionally, a couple of my mentors worked for General Dynamics Mission Systems after leaving government service, and they expressed that it's a great company to work for. I was pleased when a General Dynamics Mission Systems Director, who was also a retired Army Acquisition officer, reached out to me for an interview.

How did the SkillBridge / General Dynamics Mission Systems Military Internship Program help your transition from active duty to a civilian career?

It was an excellent stepping stone, and it couldn’t have worked out better for me. Even as an Army Acquisition officer and program manager, it was (and still is some days) an enormous transition that takes effort and commitment to learn such a challenging new role.

What would you tell others thinking about applying for the internship?

General Dynamics Mission Systems has experience with the SkillBridge internship program, so they made it effortless for me to approach them about an opportunity. I would recommend to others that they strive to attain the same transparency from their hosting company regarding permanent positions, compensation and timeline expectations.
