David and Yu Testing Equipment

Khuong V. is an Integration and Test (I&T) engineer for General Dynamics Mission Systems in Bloomington, Minnesota. As a passionate learner and a local to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, Khuong talked to us for a little bit about what got him started, how his career journey led him to General Dynamics, and a day in the life of a I&T engineer.

The Early Years: A Love for Math and Engineering

Growing up, math was always a favorite subject, which ignited a spark that would lead to a lifelong career in engineering. This passion drove the pursuit of a dual degree in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, in the Twin Cities. His educational journey didn't stop there. Khuong earned a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the same institution.

A Diverse Career Path

With over 20 years of professional experience, the career path taken has been both diverse and fulfilling. He began as a software test engineer for a software company, then transitioned to hardware test engineer roles at two circuit board manufacturing companies. A venture into manufacturing and supplier quality engineering within the aerospace sector followed, eventually leading to the current role as an integration and test engineer at General Dynamics.

A Day in the Life

A typical day revolves around various assigned tasks. Whether it's checking out an engineering development unit (EDU) in the lab or collaborating with hardware and software engineers, or system/software architects, each day brings new challenges. As an integration engineer, the initial checkout of modules is a primary responsibility before they are handed off to other teams. This involves writing and executing different test plans and procedures such as DVT (Design Verification Test), EMI (Electromagnetic Test), ENV (Environmental Test), to FQT (Functional Qualification Test). The role often includes troubleshooting with suppliers, sometimes requiring travel to their facilities or bringing them in-house.

Embracing Challenges and Teamwork

One of the most challenging aspects of the job is dealing with sudden changes in design that require new equipment, which can take weeks to procure. Despite these challenges, the ability to produce interim solutions keeps projects moving forward. The enjoyment comes from the day-to-day challenges and the mix of lab and desk work. The collaborative environment, where team members from various disciplines work together to solve issues, is particularly rewarding.

Beyond the Workbench: Engaging with the Community

Outside of daily responsibilities, involvement in other areas of the company and community adds another layer of fulfillment. Participation in the General Dynamics Bowling League provides a social outlet and a chance to connect with coworkers and retirees. Additionally, volunteering with the University of Minnesota Science and Engineering Mentor Programs has been a rewarding experience since 2018. Mentoring sophomores, juniors, and seniors provides valuable career insights and strategies, making a significant impact on their professional journeys.

Final Thoughts

The journey from a math-loving student to a seasoned integration engineer at General Dynamics has been one filled with learning, challenges, and collaboration. The passion for engineering continues to be fueled by the diverse experiences and the opportunity to mentor the next generation of engineers.
