From Tactical Control Systems to Tomahawk missile launch systems, General Dynamics Mission Systems supports the development and continuous upgrades of the Virginia-class submarines' intelligent weapons and combat systems.

About The Virginia-Class

The U.S. Navy's Virginia-class submarines (SSN) carry MK 48 torpedoes, Tomahawk cruise missiles and other payloads. These stealthy fast attack submarines are designed for anti-submarine missions, anti-ship missions, special forces operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, and more. General Dynamics Electric Boat is the prime contractor for the Virginia-class, which will replace retiring Los Angeles-class submarines.

As of 2025, 40 Virginia-class submarines have been procured in block purchases. Each Virginia-class block includes modifications and upgrades, with the latest block, Block V, including the new Virginia Payload Module (VPM). The Virginia Payload Module adds additional four large-diameter, vertical launch tubes to the submarine which are capable of launching Tomahawk missiles or other payloads.

The Virginia-class is designed to accommodate continual upgrades and rapidly introduce new systems and payloads through its life cycle.

AN/BYG-1 Combat System

Progeny Systems, a General Dynamics Mission Systems business area, supports the AN/BYG-1 combat system. The AN/BYG-1 combat system integrates the Tactical Control System (TCS), Weapons/Payload Control System (PCS), information assurance and tactical network subsystems onboard the Virginia-class submarines.

The Tactical Control System (TCS) ingests data from the submarine’s sensor and communication systems to provide a common operational picture. TCS provides sensor data fusion, target motion analysis, tactical situational awareness, and command decision tools to enable the watch standers and commanding officers to execute their mission.

The Payload Control System (PCS) provides planning, command and control, and launch control of all submarine payloads, including torpedoes, missiles, unmanned vehicles, and countermeasures.

Weapon Launch Systems

Our Progeny Systems launchers are built to preset, launch, and control unmanned vehicles and weapons both in and out of the water. This work supports anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare; land strikes; and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Our software also provides operators with training, simulation, electronic manuals, and data recording of launch events.

The Common Weapon Launcher (CWL) is the next generation weapons launch system for Virginia-class submarines. CWL processes and transmits weapon information before, during and after launch via user friendly touch screens allowing control and feedback for all weapons, onboard training, weapon simulation, and much more.

SONAR Systems

Our SONAR systems support the Virginia-class submarine’s acoustic transmit capabilities, target and weapon tracking, underwater communication, and data collection.

The Acoustic Intercept & Ranging (AI&R) is an advanced real-time processing solution integrated into the SONAR systems of every U.S. Navy submarine and is designed to autonomously detect underwater acoustic emissions.

The Precision Acoustic Ranging System (PARS) provides Virginia-class submarines with the ability to validate and calibrate SONAR arrays. PARS consists of a submarine-launched Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) which generates acoustic emissions, and on-platform processing used to receive and analyze acoustic data.

The Transmit Group (TG) hardware consists of processing cabinets, analog power amplifiers, and SONAR interfaces and enable acoustic transmit capabilities such as underwater communication, active sonar, ice draft detection, and depth sounding.

Information Assurance

Progeny Systems has been providing Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Solutions to U.S. Navy Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems (SWFTS) for more than 20 years.

Our cybersecurity subsystem resides within the AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System, a large, complex integrated combat system installed on all U.S. Navy submarines. Our cybersecurity solutions are tailored to counter current cyber threats while enabling the submarine tactical systems to successfully conduct the mission.
