Meet Kip, a dedicated lead test technician at our Bloomington, Minnesota facility whose journey into the world of manufacturing began in the Navy. His role at General Dynamics Mission Systems embodies the essence of precision, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence.
From Sailor to Manufacturing Electronics for Fighter Aircraft
Kip’s career in manufacturing was inspired by his early experiences in the Navy, where he first delved into electronics. Transitioning to General Dynamics felt like a natural progression, allowing him to continue working in a field he is passionate about.
At General Dynamics Mission Systems, Kip orchestrates the smooth passage of products through various testing phases. His responsibilities are multifaceted, from supporting fellow technicians in troubleshooting to ensuring the availability of proper test equipment. He liaises with both program management and customers to ensure seamless operations.
"My day starts with assessing the health of ongoing programs, identifying and resolving any issues the team may be facing, and collaborating with engineers and support staff to maintain product flow," Kip explains.
Continuing to Fulfill the Mission
What Kip enjoys most about working in manufacturing is the mission fulfillment.
"I deeply appreciate and respect the mission we are fulfilling here. It feels like an extension of my service in the Navy, continuing to contribute to something greater than myself," he says. His favorite part of the day is the camaraderie and collective effort of working as a team to resolve issues.
One of Kip’s most memorable projects was leading the test effort for the field upgrade of Advanced Mission Computers from Type 3 to Type 3EP (Extra Processor). This significant milestone allowed Kip and several team members to travel across the country, upgrading F/A-18 fighters for the U.S. Navy.
"It was an exhilarating experience," Kip recalls.
The constant battle with the schedule is a daily challenge for Kip and his team. They always aim to meet contract deadlines.
"When timelines tighten, I seek efficiencies without compromising product quality, whether by optimizing processes, adding personnel, or requesting overtime," Kip explains.
Staying Updated with Technology and AI
Kip stays informed on the latest advancements in manufacturing technology through research and by leveraging General Dynamics Mission Systems AI tools for quick, reliable answers. Additionally, he has developed a couple of AI assistants focused on specific products to aid in troubleshooting, enhancing efficiency.
Advice for Aspiring Manufacturers
Attention to detail is paramount in Kip’s line of work.
"Minimizing human errors directly correlates to the quality of our products," he emphasizes. His advice to those interested in a career in manufacturing is to embrace continuous learning and never shy away from asking questions. "The manufacturing field is dynamic, and staying curious will keep you ahead," he advises.
If Kip could travel back in time, he would advise his younger self to invest more in education and take advantage of opportunities for further learning, especially those funded by General Dynamics. One aspect of Kip’s job that might surprise people is the level of travel involved in certain projects, such as upgrading F/A-18 fighters across the country.
"Many might think manufacturing is purely a factory-based job," he notes.
The Best Career Advice Received
The best piece of career advice Kip has ever received is to pursue leadership training and apply those skills in daily work to enhance both personal and team performance.
Kip’s story is a testament to the dedication and passion that drives the manufacturing team at General Dynamics Mission Systems, ensuring precision, quality, and mission success in every project.
