General Dynamics will upgrade U.S. Navy and Royal Australian Navy submarine combat control systems to deliver enhanced capabilities across multiple submarine platforms.
FAIRFAX, Va. – General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), was awarded two contracts totaling $50 million to support the continued modernization of the AN/BYG-1 combat control system aboard U.S. Navy and Royal Australian Navy submarines. The AN/BYG-1 modernization program integrates the tactical control, weapons control and tactical network subsystems to provide submarine fleet operators and commanders with a common operational picture that enhances real-time intelligence and improves situational awareness.

Under the contracts, General Dynamics will continue to upgrade the submarine electronics with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software and hardware that integrates improved tactical and weapons control capabilities across multiple submarine classes. The open architecture framework enables General Dynamics to rapidly insert relevant technologies directly onto the open platforms of the submarines to meet the fast-changing requirements of today’s fleet. Additionally, the open architecture framework facilitates the quick and easy introduction of advanced capabilities on an annual or bi-annual basis.
Through the integration of sensor inputs, the tactical control system portion of the BYG-1 provides a common operational picture and improved situational awareness in a secure environment that exploits the power of sonar, electronic support measures, radar, navigation, periscopes and communication systems. With a continuously updated tactical picture, complete with real-time intelligence, commanding officers have the tools to make well-informed, mission-critical decisions that enhance mission success and reduce risk to personnel.
General Dynamics has established and installed the AN/BYG-1 common processing baseline across domestic and international submarine classes, including the U.S. Navy’s Los Angeles, Seawolf, Virginia and SSGN-class submarines and the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins-class submarines.
