Aircraft Radar Cross Section (RCS) Testing Facilities

Among our team's precision-weld accomplishments are a number of critical Aircraft Rotator Systems (ARS) and Aircraft Radar Cross Section (RCS), designed to support military aircraft during radar measurement testing. These systems turn and position the aircraft during testing while remaining invisible to radar signals. They also have motion purity which allows real-time position feedback and reduces environmental effects to enable longer testing windows. We've completed a number of these systems for both government and commercial customers in the United States, Asia and Europe.

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)

The ALMA observatory in the Chilean Andes is supported by 25 12-Meter antennas built by our team. These highly specialized radio-telescope antennas help astronomers study the origins of galaxies, stars, and planets.

AIRPORT SAFETY

Our towers also support Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE-X), enabling higher levels of runway safety. In addition, our Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR), Digital Airport Surveillance Radar (DASR) and the Surface Movement Radar (SMR) towers are available in a variety of configurations.

STEEL FOR ECOLOGY

Our team provides more than 45 steel towers for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) which is managed by the National Science Foundation to operate on the rest U.S. These towers are used to monitor and observe any changes to the local environment at all of the NEON sites and ecosystems across the U.S.

SIGNAL ACHIEVEMENTS

All of our towers, pedestals, and servo units meet the most precise tolerances, speed and durability required. These requirements support and accurately position the very large radio telescope antennas, optical telescope mirrors and their instruments operating in severe environmental conditions for years on end.

The Green Bank Telescope

The Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope, and at 450 feet tall (60% taller than the Statue of Liberty) and 16 million pounds it is also the world’s largest movable land object. This telescope is part of the national Radio Astronomy Observatory site at Green Bank, West Virginia.

The Sea-Based X-Band Radar

The Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX-1) is a floating, self-propelled, mobile, active electronically scanned array early warning radar station designed to operate in mid-ocean under conditions of high winds and heavy seas. It measures 381 feet (longer than a football field) and 279 feet high (nearly twice as tall as the Roman Colosseum). This self-propelled floating ‘stadium’ has many small radomes for various communication tasks and a large central dome that encloses its 4 million pound phased-array X band radar antenna.

Discovery Channel Telescope

The Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) is an aperture telescope funded by the Lowell Observatory and The Discovery Channel. This telescope is the fifth largest optical telescope in United States. It investigates a wide range of research topics including a survey of the Kuiper Belt objects orbiting the sun beyond Neptune. It also studies the physical properties of comets and allows scientists to investigate the evolution of small galaxies and the masses of stars.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) GOES-R

We also provided six 16-Meter antennas for NOAA’s Command and Data Acquisition Station in Wallops, VA. The antennas support NOAA’s mission for weather forecasting, severe storm tracking and meteorology research.

Space - Satellite Ground Systems - MUOS

Mobile User Objective System (MUOS)

Three of our 18.4-Meter antennas are part of the U.S. Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). MUOS provides the U.S. Armed Forces high reliability and high quality telephonic communication services.
