Conversion Kit for ModuMAX and QuadMod Systems

General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies is introducing a new power supply configuration for GaAs ModuMAX and QuadMod SSPAs. This new modular power supply (MPS) is the standard for GaAs ModuMAX and QuadMod SSPAs. Features of the conversion kit include:

  • Hot-swappable power supply modules
  • Visual front-panel indicators for power supply status
  • Mains input configurable for 3-phase AC wye or delta or single-phase
  • Remote M&C via PMBus™ I2C
  • Power capacity similar to previous MPS
  • N+1 redundancy (the SSPA can operate on fewer power supply modules than are supplied)
  • Power supply module status reported to RF Unit
  • Monitored, fault-isolated, hot-swappable DC load capacitors

Benefits of the New MPS

  • High efficiency: To isolate the DC bus from power supply faults, the MPS modules use MOSFET Or-ing, which offers lower voltage drop than diode Or-ing used in the older TDI-type power supplies. This reduced power loss translates to improved efficiency. The original MPS operated at 80% typical efficiency. The Emerson/Artesyn and new TDK-based supplies exhibit 90 to 92% typical efficiency.
  • High power density: Advances in switching power supply technology produce higher MPS power density and thus lower weight than prior versions. The new power supply module weighs 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg). In comparison, the Emerson/Artesyn module weighs approximately 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg), and the TDI module weighs 21 pounds (9.5 kg).
  • Compact size: Higher power density drives lower system size and weight. The new MPS design occupies 3 RU (5.25”) per chassis, saving 1 RU over the original TDI-type design.
  • Flexible AC mains configuration: The new MPS is easily configurable for multiple AC input options (3-phase wye or delta; single-phase). Connections to facility AC mains conductors use push-in compression contacts, avoiding the need to properly torque screw terminals. Internal power supply wires are easy to connect.
  • Easy installation: The MPS comes equipped with rack slides to allow easy mechanical installation in standard rack cabinets. All interface cables required for connection to the RF Unit are included.
  • Compatible RF Unit interface: The status connection to the RF Unit is compatible with previous MPS versions. No hardware or firmware modifications to GaAs ModuMAX or QuadMod are required for the new MPS.
  • Visual status monitor: The new MPS uses LEDs to indicate status of PS modules and load capacitors, allowing instant determination of system health.
  • Direct M&C via PMBus™: The new MPS has a Remote interface to allow users to use the PMBus™ protocol over I2C to query the individual PS modules for more detailed status, if desired.
  • Maintainability: The TDK-Lambda power supply used in the new MPS is in current production and is expected to be available for the foreseeable future. With readily available power supply modules and few replaceable components, the on-site spares requirement is minimal.
  • Reliability: 
    • The TDK-Lambda power supply used in the new MPS has an extensive installed base and proven reliability record.
    • The power supply module’s built-in PMBus™ capability allows direct user interface with the power supply modules, eliminating the need for additional M&C within the MPS chassis.
    • Electrolytic capacitors on the 12V bus are fault-isolated, monitored, and hot-swappable, eliminating them as a potential single point of failure.

Additional Details

Since their introduction to the market, General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies’ GaAs ModuMAX and QuadMod modular SSPAs have employed (3) versions of modular power supply:

  • The original MPS uses power supply modules and chassis provided by TDI Power. This MPS contains (3) power supply modules and occupies 4RU (7”) chassis space.
  • In late 2011 the TDI-based MPS was replaced by a General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies built chassis using Emerson/Artesyn power supply modules. This MPS occupies 3 RU (5.25”) chassis space and uses (3) power supply modules.
  • The most recent MPS is a 3 RU chassis that can hold up to (4) power supply modules. The chassis is built by General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies and uses power supply modules from TDK-Lambda. These modules are commercially available and in widespread use in the telecommunications industry.

In fielded installations, older power supplies that fail may need to be replaced with the latest MPS design because parts for the earlier versions are or will soon become unavailable. Some customers may wish to proactively replace older supplies in fielded installations with the new MPS to modernize their installations and minimize the possibility of future power supply replacement problems. General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies provides conversion kits with detailed instructions to allow customers to retrofit fielded systems with the new MPS. The particular conversion kit required depends on the product type (GaAs ModuMAX or QuadMod) and existing power supply configuration (one or two MPS chassis).
